SEO vs AEO vs GEO: What Actually Changes
Three acronyms are floating around now: SEO, AEO and GEO. The pitch decks make them sound like three separate disciplines you need to buy separately. They aren't. They're three layers on the same piece of content, and most of the work overlaps. The differences matter, but they're smaller and more concrete than the hype suggests.
Here's the plain-language version, followed by what each one actually changes about how you write and structure a page.
What the three acronyms actually mean
SEO is search engine optimization: getting your pages to rank in a list of blue links on Google or Bing. The user clicks through to your site. This has been the game for 25 years.
AEO is answer engine optimization: getting your content used as the answer when a system responds directly instead of handing over a link list. Think Google's AI Overviews, featured snippets, and voice assistants that read one answer aloud. The user often gets what they need without clicking.
GEO is generative engine optimization: getting your content cited or referenced inside a generative AI answer — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot. The model synthesizes an answer from multiple sources and sometimes names them. You want to be one of the named sources.
The through-line: SEO fights for a click, AEO fights to be the answer, GEO fights to be cited inside someone else's answer. Same content asset, three different jobs.
What each one changes in practice
Most of what makes a page rank in classic SEO also helps it get pulled into an AI Overview or cited by Perplexity. Clear structure, real expertise, fast pages, sensible internal links — that foundation carries across all three. The differences show up at the margins.
SEO: the layer that still does the heavy lifting
SEO is about matching a query, earning enough authority to compete, and giving the user a reason to click. In practice that means:
- A page targeting a specific question or need, not a vague topic.
- A title and headings that match how people actually search.
- Internal links so pages support each other and search engines understand your topic depth.
- Enough genuine substance that the page deserves to rank.
None of this goes away. AI features sit on top of search results; they don't replace the index. If you aren't in the running for the classic ranking, you're usually not in the running to be quoted either.
AEO: writing so a machine can lift one clean answer
AEO adds one requirement: make the answer extractable. An answer engine wants a self-contained response it can pull without editing. That changes formatting, not substance.
- State the direct answer in the first sentence under a heading, then explain. Don't bury the payoff in paragraph four.
- Phrase a heading exactly as someone asks the question — "How much does a new furnace cost?" not "Furnace Pricing Considerations."
- Use lists and small tables for anything comparative or step-based. These get lifted cleanly.
- Keep answer paragraphs tight — 40 to 60 words is a sweet spot for a snippet or read-aloud.
GEO: earning trust the model can verify
GEO is about being the kind of source a generative model reaches for and is willing to name. Generative systems favor content that reads as specific, current, and corroborated elsewhere. In practice:
- Include concrete specifics — numbers, ranges, named steps, conditions. Vague content gets summarized away; specific content gets cited because it adds information the model can't invent.
- Keep facts current and dated. Models and the retrieval systems behind them prefer fresh, unambiguous information.
- Build a presence beyond your own site. When your business name, expertise, or data shows up on directories, reputable publications, and forums, models are more likely to associate you with the topic and name you.
- Write with a clear point of view and stated experience. "In our shop we replace roughly X units a month, and here's what breaks most" is exactly the kind of first-hand detail generative answers reward.
Do you have to choose one over the other?
No — you build one asset and optimize it for all three layers at once, because they share a foundation and only diverge at the formatting and distribution edges. There is no world where you write a "GEO article" that ignores SEO, because if the page can't rank or be crawled, no answer engine or model will surface it. The correct order is: get the SEO foundation right, add the extractable structure that serves AEO, then add the specificity and off-site presence that serves GEO. It's one workflow with three checkpoints, not three projects.
A worked example: one page, three optimizations
Suppose a commercial HVAC company in Phoenix writes a page on rooftop unit replacement costs. Here's how the same page serves all three layers.
SEO layer. Title: "Commercial Rooftop HVAC Replacement Cost in Phoenix." Headings target real queries: "How much does a rooftop unit cost to replace?", "What drives the price up?", "How long does a replacement take?" The page links to related pages on maintenance contracts and unit sizing. It has enough depth — real cost ranges, the variables, a decision framework — to earn a ranking.
AEO layer. Under "How much does a rooftop unit cost to replace?", the first sentence gives a direct range: "Replacing a commercial rooftop unit typically runs $8,000 to $25,000 per unit installed, depending on tonnage and crane access." A table lists tonnage against a price range. A short ordered list covers the replacement steps. Each answer stands on its own.
GEO layer. The page adds first-hand specifics only an operator would know: "Crane rental adds $1,500 to $4,000 when the unit sits above the third floor," plus a note on how Phoenix heat load changes sizing decisions. The company's profile and this expertise also appear on trade directories and a local business publication, so a model has corroborating signals when deciding whether to name them.
One page. Three checkpoints. The GEO and AEO work took maybe 20 percent more effort than the SEO work alone — and most of that was adding real specifics you'd want in there anyway.
A quick checklist for any page
- Does the title match a real query? (SEO)
- Is the page substantive enough to rank against what's already there? (SEO)
- Does each section lead with a direct, self-contained answer? (AEO)
- Are comparisons and steps in lists or tables? (AEO)
- Does the page contain specific numbers, ranges, or first-hand detail a model couldn't invent? (GEO)
- Is the information current and dated? (GEO)
- Does your expertise show up anywhere beyond your own site? (GEO)
If you can check all seven, you've covered all three layers without running three campaigns.
Where this is heading
The share of searches that end without a click is climbing, which makes AEO and GEO more important over time — being the answer or being cited matters more as fewer people scroll a list of links. But the reverse fear, that classic search dies, is overblown. High-consideration, high-value queries — the ones that book a service call or start a case — still send people to your actual site to check you out. You optimize for all three because you don't get to pick which one your next customer uses.
